WAR DEAD & WOUNDED - ALL IN A SINGLE DAY - SEPTEMBER 9, 2006
A compilation of news for a single day... and totals for the month to date...

These daily logs detail some of the many dead and wounded in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, both military and civilian, of all nationalities. We are not aware of any source that authoritatively and consistently compiles or counts these kinds of reports.

Note: These news reports overlap in some cases. We've done our best to count a casualty only once. Where vague reports suggest "many" "some" or "several" we count a minimum of 2. The following news links were compiled by Evan D.

#1: NATO and Afghan forces using airstrikes, artillery and mortars on Saturday killed more than 30 suspected Taliban militants in southern Afghanistan, the alliance said. The casualties were the latest reported in a weeklong offensive against the Taliban in Kandahar province's Panjwayi district, and brings the number of suspected militants reported dead by NATO in the operation to at least 320. Several Taliban compounds were destroyed in the fighting, said Maj. Scott Lundy, a NATO spokesman. He said more than 30 militants had been killed in the past 12 hours. NATO and Afghan forces suffered no casualties, Lundy said. Reporters cannot access the scene of the battle, so it wasn't immediately possible to verify the death toll. Lundy said the casualty count was based on reports from troops viewing the battlefield through weapons sights and other devices. (see below)

#2: (editors note: True or not he makes a good point. These are the same body count tactics used during Vietnam to report positive progress when there's no way to prove or disprove.) A top Taliban commander and a spokesman for the militia have strongly disputed NATO's claims, saying the alliance should show the bodies of those reported killed to the media as proof. (see below)

#3: More than 40 suspected Taliban fighters and one Nato soldier have been killed during fierce fighting in southern Afghanistan, the alliance said today. One Nato soldier was killed today, the alliance said in a statement. The soldier’s nationality was not released but Canadian forces are leading the Panjwayi push and have had at least five soldiers killed since the operation began. 40   1

#4: Officials in Pakistan say suspected pro-Taleban militants have killed an elderly tribal leader for allegedly spying for U.S.-led forces operating in neighboring Afghanistan. The officials said Saturday they found the bullet-riddled body of Rahim Jan in the tribal northwestern region of North Waziristan. He was 70 years old. 1
