WAR DEAD & WOUNDED - ALL IN A SINGLE DAY - SEPTEMBER 8, 2006
A compilation of news for a single day... and totals for the month to date...

These daily logs detail some of the many dead and wounded in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, both military and civilian, of all nationalities. We are not aware of any source that authoritatively and consistently compiles or counts these kinds of reports.

Note: These news reports overlap in some cases. We've done our best to count a casualty only once. Where vague reports suggest "many" "some" or "several" we count a minimum of 2. The following news links were compiled by Evan D.

General News (In Country):
#1: Iraqi Ministry of Oil figures for August show that crude oil production and internal supply rates from northern fields rose during the month, lifting the country's total production to 2.285 million b/d, up 42,000 b/d from the previous month. Production from northern fields rose in August to 308,000 b/d, up by 28,000 b/d, the ministry figures, obtained by Platts, showed. This was due to the repair in mid-August of one of the crude oil feed pipelines connecting the Kirkuk oil production center with the major refining and pumping hub in Baiji, which were isolated after a major attack on the connecting pipelines on July 6.

#2: The Iraqi Health Ministry says more than 1,500 people were killed in Baghdad last month. The announcement Friday, follows recent comments by Iraqi and U.S. officials that a huge security crackdown in the capital was working. The Iraqi ministry said Friday, based on reports from morgues and hospitals, the death count in Baghdad from insurgents attacks and sectarian violence in August was about 14 percent lower than in July. Last week, the U.S. military said the murder rate in Baghdad dropped 52 percent in August from the daily rate for July. However, coalition officials say the U.S. estimate did not include those killed in sectarian violence, and the almost daily suicide bombings and mortar attacks. (We documented 2,450 dead in August, combining totals of all nationalities in both Iraq and Afghanistan.)
