WAR
DEAD
& WOUNDED - ALL IN A SINGLE DAY -
SEPTEMBER 3 ,
2006
A compilation of news for a
single day... and totals for the month to date...
These daily
logs detail
some of the many dead and wounded
in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan,
both military and civilian, of
all nationalities. We are not aware
of any source that authoritatively
and consistently compiles or counts
these kinds of reports.
Note:
These news reports overlap in some
cases. We've done our best to count
a casualty only once. Where vague
reports suggest "many" "some" or "several" we
count a minimum of 2. The
following news links were compiled
by Evan D.

NATO-led forces killed more than
20 Taliban militants in southern
Afghanistan on Sunday after launching
a special offensive to drive
out insurgents. Operation Medusa
came into affect in the southern
Kandahar province on Saturday
when Afghan and NATO-led troops
focused on a militant stronghold
in the Panjwayi area. An International
Security Assistance Force (ISAF)
spokesman said special emphasis
was placed on “driving
out the insurgents” so
Afghans in the area could “return
to their homes and orchards to
sustain their livelihood”.
The operation is ongoing and
will continue for some time. |

district includes Canadian, British
and American troops. He confirmed
there have been casualties, but
would not say how many were killed,
or what their nationalities are. |

Meanwhile, Afghan and NATO troops,
including most of the combat
units among Canada's 2,200 soldiers
in Afghanistan, were set up on
strategic high ground in Panjwaii
by last night. They launched
fierce artillery and aerial bombardments
on the Arghandab River valley,
one of the few green ribbons
of land in southern Afghanistan.
Canadians repelled one Taliban
ambush but found little other
resistance and have established
control of the Panjwaii district
centre, according to Lt.-Col.
Omer Lavoie, the commander of
Canadian troops on the ground. "We're
quite happy that we came in with
no casualties and got up in our
positions really quickly," Lavoie
said as artillery exploded behind
him. |

|
| NATO
and Afghan forces killed more
than 200 suspected Taliban guerrillas
with air strikes and artillery
fire in a major offensive in
a volatile province in southern
Afghanistan, the alliance said
Sunday. ''Reports indicate that
more than 200 Taliban fighters
have been killed since Operation
Medusa began early Saturday morning,''
the NATO force said in a statement.
It said more than 80 suspected
Taliban fighters were captured
by Afghan police and a further
180 insurgents were seen fleeing
