WAR DEAD & WOUNDED - ALL IN A SINGLE DAY - SEPTEMBER 5, 2006
A compilation of news for a single day... and totals for the month to date...

These daily logs detail some of the many dead and wounded in the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan, both military and civilian, of all nationalities. We are not aware of any source that authoritatively and consistently compiles or counts these kinds of reports.

Note: These news reports overlap in some cases. We've done our best to count a casualty only once. Where vague reports suggest "many" "some" or "several" we count a minimum of 2. The following news links were compiled by Evan D.

#1: U.S. artillery and air strikes killed as many as 60 suspected Taliban militants Tuesday, the fourth day of a NATO-led offensive in southern Afghanistan, a NATO spokesman said. The U.S. troops, operating under NATO command, clashed with the militants in the Panjwayi district of Kandahar province, where an offensive began over the weekend to flush out hundreds of Taliban fighters. NATO already has reported more than 200 Taliban killed in the operation. 60

#2: Five Canadian soldiers have been wounded in new battles west of Kandahar, but their injuries are not considered serious. The soldiers were injured when Canadian light armoured vehicles came under mortar attack around 6:30 p.m. local time. The Canadians returned fire and called in NATO air strikes. Several buildings were seen in flames. Hours earlier, Canadian soldiers came under rifle fire. In the clash that followed, one suspected Taliban militant was shot dead by Canadian troops. Three suspected insurgents were detained. 1     5
