A compilation of news for a single day...

These reports (each with a reputable news link) detail some of the many dead and wounded among Iraqi military and civilians. We are not aware of any source that authoritatively and consistently compiles or counts these kinds of reports. The following stories were compiled by Evan D. Evan’s search came up with at least 19 dead, 81 wounded and also a Coalition soldier killed - in fighting on a single day, Tuesday, July 4, 2006.

IRAQ

Tuesday, July 04, 2006
Iraqis: 20 dead, 22 wounded
Coalition forces: 2 dead, 0 wounded

Baghdad:

#1: Gordy Cook was shot and killed Sunday in Sadr City outside Baghdad, Iraq. He was 36 years old. At the time of his death, Heidi said her brother was working as a civilian with a security contracting company.

#2: Gunmen in camouflaged uniforms kidnapped Iraq's deputy electricity minister along with 11 of his bodyguards in eastern Baghdad on Tuesday, security officials said. The gunmen stopped Raed al-Hares' convoy in the Shiite neighborhood of Talbiya, then forced the official and his bodyguards into their vehicles, said police Lt. Ahmed Qassim.

#3: Two policemen were killed and three others wounded in a roadside bomb blast in eastern Baghdad on Tuesday, a police source said. The blast damaged a police vehicle, killing two policemen and wounding three others aboard, the source added.

#4: Iraqi and U.S. troops killed seven insurgents during two-hour long clashes on Sunday night in Baghdad's northern Adhamiya district, the U.S. military said on Tuesday.

#5: Gunmen killed an employee in the ministry of culture's office in southwestern Baghdad, a source in the Ministry of Interior said

#6: Mortar rounds landed in a square in western Baghdad where Iraqi security forces are normally stationed, wounding 11 people, including four soldiers and three traffic policemen, police said.

Karbala:

#1: Six civilians were killed execution-style by gunmen in different areas of Kerbala, 110 km (68 miles) southwest of Baghdad, hospital source sources said.

Hawija:

#1: A civilian was killed and two others wounded when several mortar rounds landed near an Iraqi army checkpoint in Hawija, 70 km (43 miles) southwest of Kirkuk, police said.

#2: Five civilians were wounded in a bomb explosion in central town of Hawija 65 km (40 miles) southwest of Kirkuk, police reported.

Mosul:

#1: Gunmen killed three civilians and a policeman in different parts of Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.

Fallujah:

#1: Gunmen wounded a member of the Association of Muslim Scholars, a Sunni religious group, on Monday in the city of Falluja, 50 km (32) miles west of Baghdad, police said.

#2: A U.S. Marine was killed in combat in western Anbar province on Tuesday, the U.S. military said.

Afghanistan

Tuesday, July 04, 2006:
Afghanis: 14 dead, 12 wounded
Coalition Forces: 1 dead, 0 wounded

#1: Jabron Hashmi arrived in Britain at the age of 12 with his family from Pakistan. He was comfortable as a Muslim and a Briton, proud of his community and, after embarking on a career in the armed forces, keen to serve his country. Lance Corporal Hashmi (24), was killed on Saturday in Helmand province, Afghanistan, the first British Muslim soldier to die in the ‘‘war on terror’’ in Iraq and Afghanistan.

#2: There are casualties following an explosion in front of a movie theater near the presidential palace in the Afghan capital. No word yet on the extent of the casualties. A local shopkeeper says it was a car bomb. The theater is about 200 yards from the heavily fortified official residence of President Hamid Karzai

One of the bombs went off in a busy traffic intersection near the presidential palace, shattering windows at a cinema and the nearby Justice Ministry, said police official Mohammed Nabi. Four people were wounded. "We don't know what was the target of this bomb," said Ali Shah Paktiawal, criminal director of Kabul police, adding that police were investigating.

#3: Earlier, a roadside bomb went off in the east of the city near a bus bringing Interior Ministry officials to work, said ministry spokesman Yousuf Stanezai. One person was wounded.

#4: The attack on the laborers happened Monday in eastern Kunar province as they traveled by truck to deliver construction supplies to an American military base, said Abdul Jalal Jalal, the provincial police chief. Five workers were killed and one was injured.

#5: Late Monday, a suicide attacker walked up to a checkpoint in southern Kandahar city and blew himself up, killing a policeman and injuring six other people. The blast sent body parts flying all over the pavement, according to an AP reporter on the scene.

#7: Seven suspected Taliban operatives were killed as they encountered with government troops in the troubled Helmand province in southern Afghanistan on Monday, Interior Ministry spokesman Yusuf Stanikzai said Tuesday.
