We couldn't let this day's report go unacknowledged...

These reports (each with a reputable news link) detail some of the many dead and wounded among Iraqi military and civilians. We are not aware of any source that authoritatively and consistently compiles or counts these kinds of reports. The following stories were compiled by Evan D. Evan’s search came up with at least 19 dead, 81 wounded and also a Coalition soldier killed - in fighting on a single day, Sunday, July 2, 2006.

Iraqis: 19 dead, 81 wounded

Baghdad:

#1: A Shiite legislator escaped an assassination attempt Sunday when a roadside bomb missed his convoy in downtown Baghdad _ a day after a female Sunni legislator was kidnapped by gunmen from her car. Iyad Jamal al-Din, a cleric from the secular Allawi List bloc in parliament, said the explosion just missed his convoy as he was leaving his house in Karradah to attend a legislative session. Three civilians were wounded in the attack, police Lt. Thaer Mahmoud said.

#2: Elsewhere in Baghdad, a roadside bomb killed Col. Muthanna Faeq Abdul-Razzaq, the assistant commander of the Iraqi army's seventh division, and wounded his driver, police said.

#3: A gunfight also erupted between gunmen and police in the insurgent stronghold of Dora in southern Baghdad, wounding one policeman and a 7-year-old child.

#4: Two car bombs went off in central Baghdad on Sunday, killing a civilian and wounding 16 others, an Iraqi Interior Ministry source said. The two blasts occurred almost simultaneously at about 11:00 a. m. (0700 GMT), one in Arasat al-Hendiyah street in southern Baghdad and the other near a popular shoe store in Baghdad's northern neighborhood of Hurriyah, the source told Xinhua on condition of anonymity. A civilian was killed and three wounded, including a police commander, in Arasat al-Hendiyah street, while 13 people was wounded in the Hurriyah neighborhood, the source said.

#5: Earlier, ten people were wounded in car bomb blast which missed a police patrol in central Baghdad's Karradah district.

#6: Adnan Imad and seven colleagues had just sat down for breakfast at a popular Baghdad restaurant on Sunday morning when a bomb blew in the windows and sent glass shards slicing through the packed restaurant. Imad, 23, escaped with shrapnel wounds to his left elbow. His colleague Thualfiqar Yassin, 27, suffered more serious head injuries. But they were the lucky ones. The Interior Ministry said the bomb killed two people and wounded 13.

#7: Police said between 10 to 15 mortar rounds slammed into Adhamiya, a Sunni neighbourhood in western Baghdad that has seen considerable insurgency activity. A Reuters cameraman at the scene reported hearing gunfire. There was no immediate word of casualties.

#8: Three mortar rounds landed in front of Yarmuk hospital, one of Baghdad's main medical centres, wounding three people, a hospital security guard said.

Baqubah:

#1: Two members of a family were killed and three wounded when bombs exploded outside their house in Baquba, 65 km (40 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.

#2: Gunmen killed three people in three different incidents in Baquba, police said.

Burhiz:

#1: An Iraqi soldier was wounded when a roadside bomb went off near his patrol in Buhriz, just south of Baquba, police said

Khairnabat:

#1: Gunmen killed two funeral-goers in Khairnabat, near Baquba, police said.

Mahmudiya:

#1: Conflicting reports from police, officials and parliamentary colleagues on Sunday indicated gunmen had attacked the motorcade of a woman member of Iraq’s parliament on Sunday, the second such incident in as many days. It seemed she had survived a kidnap attempt but that several of her bodyguards had been abducted, though accounts varied. One lawmaker told parliament that Leqa Al Yaseen’s cars had been attacked in the violent southern outskirts of Baghdad, between the city’s Dora suburb and the town of Mahmudiya. She said eight of Yaseen’s bodyguards had been abducted and did not make clear whether Yaseen herself was missing or a casualty. Sources in the Baghdad police and at the Interior Ministry identified Leqa as a doctor and member of the Shia Islamist Alliance bloc who is a senior official in the Health Ministry, controlled by the movement of Shia cleric Moqtada Al Sadr. An aide who speaks for Sadr’s movement in Baghdad, Abdul Hadi Al Daraaji, said Yaseen had survived the attack and was safe but an unknown number bodyguards had been abducted. He described her as a hospital director in Najaf, south of Baghdad. One police source in Mahmudiya also said Yaseen survived but one of her bodyguards was killed. An Interior Ministry source in Baghdad said Yaseen was abducted along with five guards.

Mahmudiya:

#1: Four people were killed and 22 wounded when a bomb exploded in a market in a town just south of Baghdad, police said

Muqdidiya:

#1: The police chief of Muqdidiya, Hussein al-Jubouri, was seriously wounded when gunmen stormed his house in the town north of Baquba, police said.

Samawah:

#1: Large explosions have been heard near the British-Australian military camp in the suburbs of the southern Iraqi city of Samawah, local police say. At least three shells may have landed near the camp, the police said.

Rashad:

#1: Two policemen were killed and two wounded in clashes with gunmen in Rashad, a small town 40 km southwest of Kirkuk, police said

Mosul:

#1: Sgt. Bryan C. Luckey, 25, of Tampa, Fla., died on June 29, in Mosul, Iraq, when he was shot by enemy forces while on mounted patrol. Luckey was assigned to the 562^nd Engineer Company, 172^nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, Fort Wainwright, Alaska.

#2: Gunmen killed one person and seriously wounded another in two different incidents in the northern city of Mosul, 390 km (240 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.

#3: The morgue in Mosul received the body of a person who had gunshot wounds, police said.

Khaffajiya:

#1: Four civilians, including an elderly woman and a boy, were wounded on Saturday in the town of Khaffajiya, near Haditha, when U.S. troops fired mortar rounds "at a known historical site from which anti-Iraqi forces had previously launched attacks", the U.S. military said in a statement.

Afghanistan

Afghanis: 11 dead, 6 wounded
Coalition Forces: 4 dead, 1 wounded

#1: Two British soldiers have been killed in fighting in Afghanistan after their base came under attack, the Ministry of Defence said. The soldiers, from the 3rd Para Battlegroup, died in the town of Sangin, in the Helmand province in the south of the country. The MoD said fighting broke out on Saturday after a British base was attacked by fighters with light weapons and rocket-propelled grenades. The Sangin valley, in the north of Helmand province, has been the focus of British military activity in recent weeks. Some 3,300 soldiers have now been deployed to Helmand as part of Nato's International Security Assistance Force.

#2: In a separate incident in the same district, 11 militants were killed by Afghan forces Saturday night during a gunbattle after firing on the troops, said Helmand provincial police chief Ghulan Nabi Malakhail. No Afghan soldiers or police were injured.

#3: Two Taliban rockets exploded Sunday inside the international coalition base in Kandahar. Military officials said no one was hurt when the weapons hit the unpopulated outskirts of the sprawling base. Following the night attack, soldiers lit up the perimeter with illumination flares and scrambled helicopters to scour the area.

#4: Meanwhile, in Kandahar City, police arrested two men after a grenade was thrown from a moving vehicle at a police substation. There were unconfirmed reports that up to six police officers may have been injured.

#5: A US helicopter crashed Sunday in southern Afghanistan, killing one crewmember, the military said. An AH-64 Apache attack helicopter plunged to the ground shortly after taking off from Kandahar Air Field at 8:30 p.m, the coalition said in a statement. One crewmember was killed, while the other was injured and evacuated for emergency treatment.

#6: An Italian army officer serving in Afghanistan died Sunday of a heart attack, the Defense Ministry said. Lt. Col. Carlo Liguori, 41, suffered a heart attack in the morning while he was standing in line for breakfast. Attempts to revive him were unsuccessful, and he died at a military hospital there, the ministry said
