news link) detail
some of the many dead and wounded among
Iraqi military and civilians. We are
not aware of any source that authoritatively
and consistently compiles or counts
these kinds of reports. The following
stories were compiled by Evan D.
Evan’s
search came up with at least 44
dead, 81 wounded and another 58 detained
in fighting on a single day, Monday,
July 3, 2006.

Baghdad :
- A
mortar struck a popular market
in northeastern Baghdad, wounding
three people, police Capt. Ali
al-Obeidi said.
- Several
mortar rounds landed in a crowded
market in the Shaab northern district
of Baghdad, wounding 10 people,
police said.
- A
suicide car bomb attack hit an
Iraqi army checkpoint in Baghdad
on Monday, killing four people,
including two Iraqi soldiers, an
Interior Ministry source said.
A suicide bomber rammed his explosive-laden
car through the barricades of an
Iraqi army checkpoint near the
Kendi hospital in eastern Baghdad,
the source told Xinhua on condition
of anonymity.
- Iraqi
police and U.S. forces killed one
insurgent and detained 15 others
after being attacked on Saturday
night in central Baghdad, the U.S.
military said.
- A
suicide car bomber apparently targeting
an Iraqi patrol blew himself up
near the al-Kindi hospital in eastern
Baghdad, wounding two soldiers,
two policemen and one civilian.
- In
eastern Baghdad, anonymous gunmen
attacked the house of Interior
Ministry Undersecretary for Intelligence
Affair Major General Hussein Kamal,
said an Iraqi police source. No
further details about attack on
Kamal's house were disclosed as
the Interior Ministry has not commented
to the incident yet.

dead
- U.S.
soldiers battled insurgents who
ambushed a military convoy in southern
Afghanistan, killing up to 20 militants,
the coalition said Monday. The
ambush occurred Sunday in southern
Helmand province's Sangin district--The
military said up to 30 extremists,
firing guns and mortars, attacked
a coalition patrol that had just
found a weapons cache in Sangin.
About 20 militants were killed,
the military said. Two soldiers
were also wounded and airlifted
to a medical facility where they
were in stable condition, the military
said.
- In
a separate incident, Afghan police
killed seven insurgents that attacked
a police checkpoint Sunday night
in Nawzad district in southern
Helmand province, the Interior
Ministry said. No Afghan police
suffered casualties, it said.
- Coalition
airstrikes killed at least nine
Taliban militants in southern Afghanistan
Sunday, Afghan and coalition officials
said. Coalition aircraft were called
in to bomb a suspected Taliban
hideout in the Joshali area of
Sangin district in southern Helmand
province, said provincial Police
Chief Ghulam Nabi Malakhail. He
said at least nine fighters were
killed including a Taliban area
commander, Mullah Tur Jan. Military
spokesman Maj. Quentin Innis confirmed
the attacks, saying the coalition
estimated there were 12* to
15 insurgents killed.

Monday, July 3, 2006: 6 dead,
14 wounded
- In
western Afghanistan, a small explosion
Monday wounded eight female students
in an English class at Herat University.
Police were investigating who planted
the explosive in a trash can, said
Nasar Ahmed Piakar, director of
the criminal department of Herat
police. He said he suspected people
who "are against peace and
stability. And they don't want
education for women."
- A
bomb hidden in a trash box of a
university class in western Herat
province killed one student and
injured eight others Monday, the
provincial governor said. "Today
at 9:30 a.m., a bomb placed in
a trash box in women's English
literature class of Herat University
exploded, and injured nine students.
One of them later died of her injuries
in the hospital," Sayed Hussein
Anwari told Deutsche Presse-Agentur
dpa.
- An
explosion hit a bus carrying paramilitary
troops in northwestern Pakistan
on Monday, killing at least five
soldiers and wounding six others,
police said. The cause of the blast
was not immediately known, but
a police official said it appeared
to be a homemade bomb. The explosion
occurred in Dir, a rugged district
about 80 miles northeast of the
provincial capital, Peshawar, police
official Pervez Khan said. The
troops were traveling to Chitral,
a town near Dir, to provide security
for an annual polo tournament there,
Khan said.
