WAR DEAD & WOUNDED - ALL IN A SINGLE DAY - JULY 12, 2006
A compilation of news for a single day...

These reports (each with a reputable news link) detail some of the many dead and wounded among Iraqi and Afghani military and civilians. We are not aware of any source that authoritatively and consistently compiles or counts these kinds of reports. The following news links were compiled by Evan D.

Wednesday, July 12, 2006

Today’s news search came up with 68 dead Iraqis and 47 wounded -- all in a single day. Today, no coalition military were reported wounded in Iraq.

Today's news coverage of Afghanistan turned up 3 Afghanis killed and 11 wounded.  Coalition wounded in Afghanistan: 2 -- all in a single day. (see below).

Notable today: If Evan is reporting on the importation of frozen chickens to Iraq, must be a slow news day! But then ... Rummy was in Baghdad on a visit, and nothing much of import makes the wire services when that happens. - P.K.  (See also below: Other news about the wars.)

Miqdadiya:
Gunmen ambushed a bus station Wednesday in a volatile town northeast of Baghdad, kidnapping two dozen people and killing all but four, authorities said. The attackers drove up in several cars and seized 24 people from the bus station in Muqdadiyah, about 60 miles northeast of Baghdad. Iraqi Maj. Gen. Ahmed al-Awad, the commander of the army's 5th division in the area, told state TV that 20 bodies had been found and the victims were Shiites. He said four people were rescued. Police confirmed that 20 bodies were found but said their identities were uncertain.
(?) "There was a very serious breach of security in Diyala province when 60-80 Shiites were kidnapped from the bus station in Muqdadiyah," he said. "The police appear to be complicit in this incident because they pulled out of the area right before the kidnapping," he added, echoing a charge more commonly raised by the minority Sunni community against the security forces.

#4: Accidents, aging, and the demands of war have obliged the Marine Corps to bring back a number of its warhorses from retirement - a handful of Super Stallion helicopters recalled to active duty after a decade in mothballs. At least seven refurbished CH-53E Super Stallion heavy-lift helicopters will be brought back on line with Marine Heavy Helicopter Squadron 464 at New River Air Station. Nevertheless, at $5 million for retrofitting, it's far less expensive than buying a new Super Stallion for $27 million. With one helicopter back in service, two more are currently being restored at the Cherry Point Depot and are scheduled to be delivered to a Marine Corps squadron sometime within the year, Bair said. Four more Super Stallions will be refurbished in pairs during the next few years, in hopes that all seven additional aircraft will be in the fleet by 2009.
