We are not aware of any source that authoritatively and consistently compiles or counts these kinds of reports. The following news links were compiled by Evan D. Today’s news search came up with 96 dead Iraqis and 244 wounded -- all in a single day. Today, no coalition military were reported wounded in Iraq.

Today's news coverage of Afghanistan turned up 45 Afghanis killed and one wounded. Coalition wounded in Afghanistan: 3 Coalition members were wounded -- all in a single day. (see below).

Government Forced to Depend on Local Gunmen

Al-Zaman/ AFP say that Baghdad was the site Sunday of the worst wave of of faith-based violence ever perpetrated by its sectarian militias in one day. Eyewitnesses in the Iraqi capital said that elements of the Mahdi Army, loyal to young Shiite nationalist cleric Muqtada al-Sadr, killed at least 61, among them women and children, on the basis of their religious identity. [Official Iraqi and US sources said these numbers were exaggerated, and most American wire services gave the number of dead as 42.] They set up a checkpoint at the entrance to the Jihad quarter of Baghdad for this purpose. Eyewitnesses said that gunmen wearing civilian clothing set up checkpoint barriers in the streets beginning early Sunday morning and began stopping passers-by. They investigated their identities, and killed anyone whom they found to be Sunni Arab. The eyewitnesses also said that some gunmen entered a number of homes and shot down the inhabitants. Some then set the houses on fire.

Baghdad:

#1: a car parked near a repair shop on the edge of the Shiite slum of Sadr City blew up, followed within minutes by a suicide car bomber who drove into the crowd that had gathered near the site. Hospital officials said at least eight people were killed and 41 wounded in the blast. AP Television News footage showed the devastated repair shop with a crumpled roof and the blackened hulks of cars on the street outside.

Several police sources said two car bombs caused the blasts, several minutes apart. One official said the second explosion was a mortar but others said both blasts, by the roadside in a busy neighbourhood, appeared to have been triggered remotely.

(update) Six people were killed and seven wounded when clashes erupted between militias and residents in the mainly Sunni district of Dora, southern Baghdad, police said.

#2: A roadside bomb also struck a police patrol near a restaurant elsewhere in eastern Baghdad, wounding three policemen, police Lt. Ahmed Qassim said.

#3: And a bomb exploded in the Shurja market in central Baghdad, killing three people and wounding 18, police Col. Adnan al-Obeidi said.

#4: Clashes broke out between Interior Ministry commandos and gunmen in the insurgent stronghold of Dora in southern Baghdad, leaving one commando dead and two wounded.

#5: Two bullet-riddled bodies were found in western Baghdad.

#6: Seven people including a woman are dead after gunmen ambushed a bus in a predominantly Sunni neighborhood in western Baghdad. Police say the gunmen killed all six passengers and the driver before setting the bus on fire.

#7: (Sunday) Clashes also broke out between gunmen and Iraqi police in at least three neighborhoods across the capital, police and residents said. Three Shiite militiamen were killed in fighting with security forces in one of them, police said.

One police source said six militiamen lay dead on Dora bridge and seven were wounded after a shootout with residents defending the district. But another police official said the gunbattles involved militias on one side and the Iraqi police and army on the other. Five soldiers were wounded in the shooting, the source said.

#8: A bomb exploded near Iraq's central bank in central Baghdad on Monday, killing several people, police said. Police said the bomb had been planted outside a restaurant in Rasheed Street, a busy commercial area and the main artery of old downtown Baghdad. There were unconfirmed reports that the attack was carried out by a suicide bomber

Shortly afterwards a bomb planted outside a restaurant near the central bank killed six and wounded 28, police said.

#9: Gunmen attacked the bodyguards of a judge in Baghdad, killing two and wounding three, an Interior Ministry source said.

#10: Five policemen were wounded when a roadside bomb went off near their patrol in northeastern Baghdad, police said.

#11: (repeat?) Twelve people were killed and 62 wounded, police said, in the car bomb blasts near a telephone exchange in the eastern Talbiya district. It is a bastion of the Mehdi Army militia of radical young cleric Moqtada al-Sadr.

#12: In the mostly western Shi'ite district of Aamil, unknown gunmen opened fire on an unmarked car carrying four policemen, killing three, police said.

Mahmoudiya:

#1: A bomb struck a gas station in Mahmoudiya, south of Baghdad, wounding 10 people.

Baqubah:

#1: A bomb struck a police patrol in Baqouba, wounding five policemen and eight civilians.

#2: In further violence, a prominent member of the Sunni Iraqi Islamic Party was assassinated Monday in a village near Baquba, 60 kilometres north-east of Baghdad, said security sources. Sources told dpa that gunmen had killed Adnan Iskandar, the party's regional leader in Baquba, and seriously injured three of his bodyguards as a party convoy passed through the village of Qubba.

#3: Two people were killed by gunmen in western Baquba, the source said.

Bani Saad:

#1: Meanwhile, two civilians were killed in Imam Mohammad Al-Sakran area near the town of Bani Saad west Baqouba.

Diyala Prv:

#1: A member of the provincial council in volatile Diyala, Adnan Iskandar al-Mahdawi, was killed and two of his guards were wounded in a drive-by shooting.

Dujail:

#1: Gunmen kidnapped an agriculture official in Dujail, 55 miles north of Baghdad, police said.

#2: The body of a dead person, with gunshot wounds and bearing signs of torture was found near Dujail, police said.

Tikrit:

#1: In Tikrit, 180 kilometres north of Baghdad, US troops handed over the bodies of eight Iraqis to police a medical source said on Monday. A source at Tikrit Educational Hospital told Deutsche Presse- Agentur dpa that Iraqi police said the US military had given them the bodies and requested they be transferred to a hospital. The troops did not mention the cause or time of the deaths nor say who was behind the killings.

Suwayrah:

#1: Police found five unidentified bodies in Suwayrah, 40 kilometres south of Baghdad.

Yusufiya:

#1: One civilian was killed and two others were wounded when a roadside bomb targeting a police convoy exploded in Yusufiya, 15 km (9 miles) south of Baghdad, police said.

Hilla:

#1: A police patrol in the predominantly Shiite city of Hillah, about 95 kilometres south of Baghdad, also hit a roadside bomb, leaving one policeman dead and four wounded, army Capt. Hassim al-Khafaji said.

Kut:

#1: The bodies of five men, including one whose mother was a former member of the ousted Baath Party and a policeman, also were found in Kut, 160 kilometres southeast of the capital.

Basra:

#1: A former high-ranking officer from Saddam Hussein's army was killed in a shootout in the southern city of Basra. Ex-staff Maj. Gen. Salih Mohammed Salih killed one of the attackers and wounded the other before he was shot to death.

Kirkuk:

#1: In Kirkuk, a suicide truck bomb struck an office of the Patriotic Union of Kurdistan, one of the main Kurdish political parties in Iraq, killing five people and wounding 12 others, police Brig. Sarhat Qadir said.

#2: Another explosion in Kirkuk targeted the convoy of the US consul as it was leaving a residential area in the west of the city injuring eight people, including three policemen, medical sources said.

#3: Also in Kirkuk, a bomb exploded aboard a small passenger bus killing one civilian and injuring seven, the source said.

AFGHANISTAN

Afghanis: 45 dead, 1 wounded
Coalition: 3 wounded

#1: U.S.-led troops have mounted big offensives in Afghanistan's south and east over recent weeks in response to the most intense phase of Taliban violence since the hard-line Islamists were ousted in 2001. "Afghan national security forces and coalition troops conducted a raid on a known extremist compound July 10, killing more than 40 extremists," the U.S. military said in a statement. One member of the Afghan security forces was killed and three members of the U.S.-led coalition force were wounded in the attack on the compound, 10 km (six miles) north of the provincial capital, Tirin Kot, it said.

#2: The defence secretary is expected to announce today that more British troops will be sent to Afghanistan to bolster the forces already there. Britain currently has 4,000 servicemen and women in Afghanistan but concern has increased recently that that is insufficient.

#3: Four Taliban fighters were killed after they attacked a police post in eastern Afghanistan, a governor has said as a major operation against the rebels continued in the south. A group of rebels stormed a police checkpost in Paktika province late Sunday in the latest of a string of attacks blamed on fighters for the extremist movement, which was removed from government in late 2001. "During fighting four Taliban were killed and one policeman was slightly wounded," provincial governor Mohammad Akram Ikhpolwak said Monday.

#1: Thirteen Indian crew members of a cargo vessel are stranded in the Iraqi port of Basra since a month after an explosion hit their vessel leaving one compatriot dead. The vessel Al Aber, which left Sharjah Creek on June 4 for Basra port, was hit by an explosion at Abu Fulus port on June 16, one of the injured crew members Deepak said. "We didn't know whether it was a terrorist attack or what happened. But our compatriot, Imam Hussien, was killed and six of us injured," he was quoted as saying by the Khaleej Times.

#2: Some 200 sacked policemen from a province where Iraqi forces will take over security from British troops this month stormed the governor's office on Monday, beating people with hoses and stabbing them with knives. The policemen, who were fired by Iraq's new interior minister for forgery and bribery, were demanding they be reinstated in their jobs in the southern city of Samawa, the capital of Muthanna province.
