A compilation of news for a single day...

These reports (each with a reputable news link) detail some of the many dead and wounded among Iraqi military and civilians. We are not aware of any source that authoritatively and consistently compiles or counts these kinds of reports. Our totals are not official totals, and there could be some overlap. The following stories were compiled by Evan D.

A news search came up with 76 dead in Iraq, and 70 wounded in fighting on a single day, Thursday, July 6, 2006.

A similar search turned up news in Afghanistan of 8 dead and 7 wounded, plus one Coalition soldier killed - on Thursday, July 6, 2006 (see below).

Iraqis: 76 dead, 70 wounded

General news:

#1: The U.S. Navy has announced plans to deploy new versions of the Swift boats used in the Vietnam War to patrol Iraq's Euphrates River. The 39-foot boats, which each hold 16 sailors, are expected to be deployed next year for the first time in more than 30 years to help combat the Iraqi insurgency, The Los Angeles Times reported Thursday.

Baghdad:

#1: An Iraqi former judge was killed and his son and driver wounded when gunmen ambushed his car in western Baghdad on Thursday, police said. Saleh Hassan Yass al-Awsi was a Sunni Arab and a leading figure in an association of former judges who are lobbying Iraq's new parliament to be allowed to return to work after they were dismissed by the U.S. occupation authority.

#2: (N.W. of) A suicide car bomb struck a joint Iraqi-U.S. checkpoint near Ana town, about 150 miles northwest of Baghdad, wounding two Iraqi solders.

#3: Police found the bodies of six people who had been handcuffed and shot in the head in three different locations in Baghdad.

#4: Thirty-five corpses have been discovered in different areas of the Iraqi capital over the past 24 hours, most of them showing signs of torture, police reported. Five of the corpses were found in the insurgent-dominated western district of Amiriyah, while the rest were scattered throughout the capital, with the majority showing signs of torture and killed with a bullet to the head.

#5: Two car bombs exploded one after the other in the Shiite neighbourhood of Washash in predominantly Sunni western Baghdad, killing three and wounding eight

#6: A roadside bomb struck an electric pylon in eastern Baghdad, wounding one civilian and causing power outages. Police also defused three other bombs in the area.

Baqubah:

#1: Gunmen killed a police major from the Interior Ministry as he was driving near Baqouba.

Madain:

#1: Just south of the capital, in Madain, two civilians were killed by mortar rounds during an early morning insurgent assault on the main police station.

A mortar barrage struck a police station in Madain, southeast of Baghdad, killing two people, including a woman, and wounding seven policemen.

Najaf:

#1: (Kufa) A suicide car bomber blasted two coaches carrying Iranian pilgrims outside a Shi'ite Muslim shrine in Iraq at dawn on Thursday, killing 12 people and wounding 41, police and health officials said. The bomber drove his car between the two Iranian coaches as they arrived at the Maithem al-Tamar shrine in Kufa, a religious centre on the outskirts of the main Shi'ite holy city of Najaf, 160 km (100 miles) south of Baghdad, police said. Eight of the dead were Iranians, three of those women

Mosul:

#1: Gunmen killed a real estate broker at his office in Mosul

#2: A roadside bomb also struck a police patrol in the northern city, wounding one of the policemen.

Kirkuk:

#1: Two Iraqis were wounded Thursday in an explosion that rocked the northern Iraqi city of Kirkuk. An Iraqi police source told KUNA that an explosive device blew up in central Kirkuk wounding two civilians.

#2: Several explosions and attacks were witnessed across the city targeting police checkpoints but no casualties have been reported.

#3: In the northern oil city of Kirkuk, six people were shot dead in a number of incidents, including four members of the same family who were murdered southwest of the city while driving on the highway.

Khaffajiyah:

#1: Four Iraqi civilians were injured yesterday in the town of Khaffajiyah, Iraq, during a mortar firing mission conducted by Coalition Forces. Coalition Forces were conducting counter-insurgency operations by firing mortar rounds at a known historical site from which anti-Iraqi forces had previously launched attacks.

Al Zab: (Near Kirkuk)

#1: Iraqi police found the body of a beheaded man in the small town of al-Zab, near Kirkuk, 250 km (155 miles) north of Baghdad, police said.

Ana town: (?)

#1: A suicide car bomb struck a joint Iraqi-U.S. checkpoint near Ana town, about 155 miles northwest of Baghdad, wounding two Iraqi solders.

Afghanistan
Afghanis: 8 dead, 7 wounded
Coalition forces: 1 dead

#1: A coalition soldier was killed Wednesday in an attack in southeastern Afghanistan, the U.S. military announced Thursday. The fighting in Paktika province also wounded a 10-year-old Afghan girl, who was treated at a coalition medical facility and is in stable condition after surgery, according to the military statement. Coalition soldiers were on patrol when a group of extremists fired on them in Paktika's Gayan district, the military said.

#2: In Sori district of southern Zabul province on Wednesday night, coalition and Afghan security forces launched operations near Mt Zubaida, killing three suspected Taliban fighters and arresting four others, according to provincial police Chief Noor Mohammad Paktin.

#3: Four other militants were killed and six arrested during search operations in Shingai district, he said.

#4: In addition, Afghan forces and police were attacked by militants, who killed one Afghan soldier and wounded three other soldiers, Paktin said. During the clash, three insurgents were also killed, he said.
