IRAQI & AFGHANI DEATHS - ONE DAY'S MAYHEM - JULY 5, 2006
A compilation of news for a single day...

These reports (each with a reputable news link) detail some of the many dead and wounded among Iraqi military and civilians. We are not aware of any source that authoritatively and consistently compiles or counts these kinds of reports. Our totals are not official totals, and there could be some overlap. The following stories were compiled by Evan D.

A news search came up with 47 dead in Iraq, 80 wounded and another 2 detained in fighting on a single day, Wednesday, July 5, 2006.

A similar search turned up news in Afghanistan of 46 dead and 91 wounded on Wednesday, July 5, 2006 (see below).

A third explosion in eastern Kabul targeted an Afghan army convoy on Policharki Road, but nobody was reported hurt, said police officer Mohammad Nasim. The blast left a hole one yard wide in the roadside.

#4: Taliban militants have attacked the convoy of a private US security firm in western Afghanistan and killed two local security guards. A five-vehicle convoy of the USPI company was travelling through western Herat province late Tuesday when it was ambushed by Taliban fighters, deputy provincial police chief Ghulam Sarwar Haidari told АFР Wednesday. "Taliban attacked a USPI convoy. One vehicle was damaged and two USPI guards were killed yesterday," Haidari said. The company has a strong presence in Afghanistan, providing security for private firms, military bases and a host of organisations.

#8: In a skirmish Tuesday in northern Kandahar province, a Canadian reconnaissance platoon from Alpha Company engaged about a dozen Taliban fighters, killing one and wounding another who was brought to the Kandahar Airfield for treatment.

#13: A Taliban leader who thanked God and Canadians before renouncing the insurgents a few weeks ago has died. Mullah Ibrahim had lost a leg and suffered from jaundice and other diseases when he changed sides. Afghan officials said he died of natural causes Tuesday and was buried Wednesday.
