Sunday, March 04, 2007 8:30 AM - The British Ministry of Defense is now confirming that the two NATO troops killed in southern Afghanistan on Saturday, March 3rd, were British soldiers. They died in a rocket attack in the Sangin area in Helmand Province. Both were assigned to the 29 Commando Regiment, Royal Artillery.

Monday, March 05, 2007 6:47 AM -

The British Ministry of Defense has released the identities of the two British soldiers killed in a rocket attack in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, on Saturday, March 3rd:

Ross Clark, 25, of South Africa
Lance Bombadier Ross Clark, 25, of South Africa.  Although born in Zimbabwe (the former Rhodesia), Clark was raised in South Africa. He joined the British Army in 2002, signing on with the 29 Commando Regiment of the Royal Artillery after finishing basic and specialist training. A thorough professional and accomplished triathlete, Clark served in both Iraq and Afghanistan, as well as completing military exercises in Norway, Belize and the United States.

Liam 'Paddy' McLaughlin, 21, of Lancashire, England
Lance Bombadier Liam 'Paddy' McLaughlin, 21, of Lancashire, England.  Known as 'Paddy' to all who knew him, McLaughlin hailed from the Lancashire area of England, and, like Clark, enlisted in the army in 2002. Possessed of boundless energy, "Paddy only had one setting, and that was throttle fully on." Whether learning to ski for the first time in Novice Cold Weather Warfare Training or searching the beaches for good surf on weekends, McLaughlin threw himself wholeheartedly into everything he undertook ... and took enormous pride in sideburns that were "pointedly non-regulation".

Tuesday, March 6, 2007 1:37 PM - The British Ministry of Defense is announcing the death of a British Royal Marine from enemy action in the Kajaki area of northern Helmand Province, Afghanistan, on Tuesday, March 6th.

Tuesday, March 06, 2007 3:34 PM -
Kevin Megeney, 25, of Stellarton, Nova Scotia
The Canadian Department of National Defense is reporting the death of a Canadian soldier at Kandahar Air Field in Afghanistan on Tuesday, March 6th. They identify him as Corporal Kevin Megeney, 25, of Stellarton, Nova Scotia. According to a Canadian Press article, his family was told that he was shot in the left lung while in his tent at the base, and that he survived for a brief time following the incident. But no details are available as to how the incident happened except that enemy fire has been ruled out. The Canadian Press article mentions "friendly fire" but we believe this is probably an improper use of the term. Megeney was a Reservist with the 1st Battalion of the Nova Scotia Highlanders.

The DoD has confirmed that two National Guardsmen who died in a non-hostile vehicle roll-over in Ethiopia on March 5th were indeed assigned to Operation Enduring Freedom:

Gregory D. Fejeran, 28, of Barrigada, Guam
Sergeant Gregory D. Fejeran, 28, of Barrigada, Guam

Christopher J.C. Fernandez, 28, of Dededo, Guam
Sergeant Christopher J.C. Fernandez, 28, of Dededo, Guam

According to an article in Guam's Pacific Daily News, the pair were travelling in an army convoy between Dire Dawa and Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, when their vehicle fell into a deep ravine. The driver and another Guam National Guardsman were injured in the accident. Fejeran, whom the article states was from Mangilao in Guam, was a wastewater operator for the Guam Waterworks Authority. He joined the Guard in 2001. He leaves behind a wife, a 12-year-old daughter and an 8-year-old son. Fernandez had held a variety of jobs ... waiter, cook, driver and eventually a sanitation worker before deploying to Ethiopia. He had joined the Guard in 2004. Fernandez, whom the article states was originally from Yona in Guam, has a 5-year-old daughter who lives with her mother in Hawaii.

Friday, March 30, 2007 7:18 AM - The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) website has posted a notice of another NATO troop death. This one occurred on Thursday, March 29th, in "Regional Command East" and would seem to be a hostile fire death of some sort, although the report is vague in this respect. The exact location of the death and the nationality involved were not given. Three other NATO soldiers were wounded in the incident.

Saturday, March 31, 2007 6:57 AM -
Edmund McDonald, 25, of Casco, Maine
The Portland (Maine) Press Herald is reporting the death of Sergeant Edmund McDonald, 25, of Casco, Maine, in Afghanistan on Wednesday, March 28th. His family was told that his vehicle tipped over while on convoy duty. Although McDonald had only been in the army since late 2003, he had already served two tours of duty in Iraq. And he seemed committed to making the army his career. McDonald was with the 82nd Airborne Division out of Fort Bragg, NC. He had been married for nearly three years.

Agustin Gutierrez, 19, of San jacinto, California

Wednesday, April 04, 2007 1:51 PM - The DoD release that confirmed the death of Specialist Christopher M. Wilson on March 29th at Korengal Outpost in Afghanistan, had indicated that his hometown was Bangor, Maine. However, the Bangor (Maine) Daily News is reporting that this is not the case ... that the office of the governor of Maine is saying that although Wilson's young daughter lives in Maine, Wilson himself was from Massachusetts. Another article from the Boston Patriot Ledger states that he was born in Dickinson, North Dakota, but raised in Chicopee, Massachusetts.
